Music for Young Children® is a program that teaches small groups of adults and children music skills and includes piano instruction, singing, rhythm ensembles, sight reading, ear training, theory and composition. This year marks the 30th anniversary of MYC. The organization chose to celebrate this milestone with a fundraising campaign, with proceeds going to the Burn Fund. They named their campaign "pennies for practicing".
Sponsors were sought and asked to pay the student one penny for every minute of practicing done over a period of four weeks. In many cases the teachers matched the funds raised by the students. THe SPFFA Burn Fund is honored that MYC would choose the Burn Fund as the charity for this fundraising campaign.
This successful music program, with corporate head office in Kanata, Ontario was founded in 1980 by Frances Balodis and is now taught to 24,000 students annually across Canada, the United States, New Zealand, South Korea, Vietnam and Singapore. As Founder and Chairman of the Board of MYC, Frances Balodis has managed its growth from a one-person home enterprise to a profitable international business with more than 900 licensed music educators.
The Burn Fund – which focuses on burn prevention and education, as well as improving the quality of life for burn survivors – was chosen as the recipient because of the Music for Young Children® character “Fireman Fred,’ who represents the F key on the piano in our MYC classes.
