The Saskatchewan Professional Fire Fighters Association Burn Fund unveiled a new burn prevention and safety video before a receptive audience of senior citizens, Professional Fire Fighters from across the province and members of the local media at the Victoria Park Personal Care Community in Regina earlier today.
The 20-minute video BURN SAFETY: A Reminder for Seniors is the SPFFA Burn Fund's most recent effort to educate residents in the province of Saskatchewan and work to eliminate the risk of burns.
Since 1997, fire-related incidents have resulted in the deaths of 38 Saskatchewan residents over the age of 60 -- all preventable. The education video focuses on seven key safety messages:
-Kitchen and Stove Safety
-Smoke Alarms Save Lives
-Careless Smoking
-Testing Hot Tap Water
-Hot Water Can Be Harmful
-Stop, Drop and Roll
-Planning Fire Escape
"Burn prevention is an issue without age limits," says SPFFA President Gerry Huget. "Our aging population is growing. Canadian's are living longer, staying active and in control of their day-to-day lives, however, as people age the risk of being injured or killed by fire or burn-related incident increases significantly.
"The video is a meaningful and valuable educational tool aimed at residents of Saskatchewan, but the message is applicable well beyond the borders."
In December 2006, 1500 copies will be distributed to seniors facilities across the province with hopes that the video will reach a varied and diverse audience.
The film was developed and produced in Regina, SK by Tailwind Studios in association with the SPFFA Burn Fund and with the financial participation of the Saskatchewan Film Employment and Tax Credit.
"We are extremely proud to be involved in this potentially life-saving project," comments Producer Brad Woodard, Tailwind Studios. "The video resulting from the unique partnership developed between Tailwind Studios and the SPFFA Burn Fund is another example of the quality programming produced in Saskatchewan."
With a primary focus on education, particularly initiatives such as BURN SAFETY: A Reminder for Seniors, burns can be prevented. The SPFFA Burn Fund is working to ensure training, survivor support and maintenance of the three provincial burn treatment centres become redundant by eliminating their need through education and prevention.
Since 1974, the Burn Fund has raised more than $6 million dollars. The Saskatchewan Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund is a registered non-profit organization, dedicated to burn prevention, public education, specialized medical burn training, and survivor support.
The fund also supports the upgrade and purchase of specialized equipment for Saskatchewan's two provincial burn units located at the Regina General Hospital and the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon as well as the Hyperbaric Chamber in Moose Jaw.
